Toyota GR Corolla Morizo Edition: Two-seater coming to Australia in 2023
Can the Toyota GR Corolla be any more bonkers? Of course it can. Enter a new two-seat variant, known as the Morizo Edition overseas.
The lighter, torquier, two-seat GR Corolla will arrive in Australia in 2023.
Toyota Australia plans to open the order book for both the regular four- and two-seat GR Corolla models in the fourth quarter of 2022, with details to be revealed closer to that time.
For the two-seat model, Toyota has also tweaked the 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine. In the two-seater it generates 224kW at 6500rpm, and 400Nm between 3250 and 4600rpm.
While power is unchanged, the less practical variant has 30Nm more torque.
As with the regular GR Corolla, the Morizo’s engine is hooked up to all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. The gear ratios has been tweaked, with first, second, and third gears closer together.
In addition — or is that subtraction — to this, the company has made the car 30kg lighter, primarily by removing the rear seats and replacing them with additional body bracing.
To improve rigidity still further Toyota has slathered an extra 3.3m of structural adhesive to various points of the car.
Other changes under the skin include a revised suspension setup. The front McPherson struts are now fitted with inverted monotube shock absorbers, while monotube shocks accompany the rear double-wishbones.
The two-seat GR Corolla rides on 10mm wider rubber, with 245/40 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres replacing the standard vehicle’s Yokohama Advan Apex V601 units.
Inside the cabin the two-seater features cast-black trim, faux suede elements for the steering wheel and centre console, and exclusive semi-bucket seats.
Metallic matte grey paint is an option only available to those who stump up for the two-seat GR Corolla.
